Overview
The Berlin Geothermal Project, Phase Two, undertaken by LaGeo, S.A. de C.V., expands the existing Berlin Geothermal Power Plant in El Salvador. The project involves drilling additional geothermal wells and installing a new 44 MW condensation power unit, which commenced commercial operations in February 2007. The electricity generated from this project is supplied to the national interconnected grid, contributing to the country's energy needs.
Environmental impact
By harnessing geothermal energy, the project reduces El Salvador's dependence on imported fossil fuels, thereby mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmental sustainability. The utilization of a cleaner energy source helps in preserving natural ecosystems and biodiversity, while also supporting climate action efforts by avoiding emissions that would result from conventional electricity generation methods.
Certification
The project is certified by the CDM Registry and validated by DNV. It adheres to the Carbon Standard set forth by the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). With a credit start date of December 29, 2014, and an end date of December 28, 2019, the project has demonstrated its adherence to rigorous environmental and social standards.
