Overview
The CERRADO BIOME project is a REDD+ initiative focused on preventing the conversion of native forests and grasslands into agricultural land, particularly for soy, corn, and cattle farming, in the Cerrado biome of Brazil. Covering an area of approximately 11,000 hectares initially, the project aims to expand its reach by incorporating additional land parcels. Led by ERA Cerrado Assessoria e Projectos Ambientais Ltd, the project utilizes the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the SOCIALCARBON Standard to monitor and ensure social, environmental, and economic co-benefits.
Environmental impact
With the Cerrado biome experiencing significant deforestation due to agricultural expansion, this project plays a crucial role in preserving native vegetation and safeguarding vital ecosystems. By preventing further deforestation, the project mitigates greenhouse gas emissions and protects biodiversity, including key water sources and the Guarani aquifer.
Certification
Registered and validated by RINA, the project adheres to the REDD+ mechanism and operates under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. Carbon credits are issued based on the project's success in avoiding deforestation and preserving native ecosystems.
