Kariba Project

Overview

The Kariba REDD+ Project, located in Matabeleland North, Midlands, Mashonaland West, and Mashonaland Central provinces of Zimbabwe, spans nearly 785,000 hectares of forest comprising mopane and miombo woodland. Historically supporting diverse wildlife populations, recent economic and political challenges have led to decreased tourism, increased poaching, and agricultural productivity decline, affecting local livelihoods. The project aims to combat deforestation driven by socio-economic factors by implementing community-based initiatives focused on improved agriculture, beekeeping, fuelwood plantations, fire management, and indigenous knowledge systems.

Environmental impact

By protecting unlogged and previously logged forests, the project preserves vital ecosystems capable of regenerating into mature, 'old growth' forests. Through sustainable land management practices and the promotion of alternative livelihoods, such as beekeeping and fuelwood plantations, the project mitigates deforestation pressures. Anti-poaching measures further safeguard biodiversity, including vulnerable species like leopards, elephants, and various birds, enhancing ecosystem resilience and promoting wildlife conservation.

Social benefits

The Kariba REDD+ Project prioritizes community development, offering training and support for improved agriculture, beekeeping, and fuelwood production, thereby enhancing local livelihoods and food security. Investments in Hydraform technology provide sustainable alternatives to wood-based construction, creating income-generating opportunities for local youth. Additionally, the project improves access to education and healthcare services, fostering human capital development and enhancing community well-being. Employment opportunities in anti-poaching efforts contribute to local economic growth while safeguarding wildlife.

Certification

Certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community, Biodiversity (CCB) standards, the Kariba REDD+ Project adheres to stringent criteria for environmental and social integrity. Recognized with Climate Gold and Biodiversity Gold certifications, the project's multi-faceted approach ensures sustainable land management practices, biodiversity conservation, and community empowerment. Despite meeting guidelines for issued credits from Verra, a leading carbon credit issuer, the project faced scrutiny from green groups regarding forest preservation claims and community benefits.
