Overview

The Wildlife Works Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project - Phase II The Community Ranches spans 169,741 hectares in Southeastern Kenya, connecting Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks. Building on the success of Wildlife Works' Phase I project (Rukinga Ranch), KCRPII aims to reduce over 38,700,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions over 30 years. By establishing a wildlife corridor, the project safeguards biodiversity, providing safe passage for critically endangered species like the African Wild Dog and White-backed Vulture. Additionally, the project promotes economic diversification among local communities, supporting initiatives such as organic clothing production, indigenous tree nurseries, ecotourism, and EcoCharcoal production.

Environmental impact

The project contributes significantly to biodiversity conservation by preserving critical habitats for a rich variety of flora and fauna, including endangered species. The establishment of the wildlife corridor facilitates safe movement for wildlife populations, enhancing ecosystem resilience. Moreover, through sustainable land management practices and anti-poaching efforts, the project helps mitigate threats to biodiversity and promotes ecosystem health and resilience.

Social benefits

This project generates various social benefits for local communities, aligning with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It provides educational opportunities through scholarship programs and infrastructure development, improving access to quality education. Additionally, the project creates employment opportunities in various sectors such as ecotourism, sustainable agriculture, and clothing production, contributing to economic growth and poverty alleviation. Healthcare provisions, clean water initiatives, and gender equality programs further enhance community well-being and social equity.

Certification

Certified under various standards, including the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SDVISTA), and Climate, Community, and Biodiversity (CCB). It holds certifications such as CCB - Climate Gold and CCB - Biodiversity Gold, highlighting its commitment to delivering tangible climate, community, and biodiversity benefits while adhering to rigorous environmental and social standards. While the project may have overestimated its baseline deforestation rate, its implemented activities are still considered highly supplementary.
