Kulera Landscape

Overview

The Kulera Landscape project, located in Malawi, is a REDD+ initiative aimed at averting unplanned mosaic deforestation and degradation. Covering over 169,000 hectares of biodiverse forest, the project adopts a pro-poor approach to community-based forest management, benefiting more than 45,000 households within a 10 km radius of the project areas.

Environmental impact

The project plays a crucial role in safeguarding biodiversity and protecting critical habitats within the targeted forest areas. By preventing deforestation and degradation, the project helps conserve over 600 species of flora and fauna, including iconic wildlife such as lions, elephants, and various antelope species. Additionally, the project supports the preservation of important bird populations and serves to maintain the ecological balance of the region.

Social benefits

Beyond its environmental impact, the Kulera Landscape project delivers significant social benefits to local communities. Through its pro-poor approach, the project empowers thousands of households by involving them in sustainable forest management activities and livelihood development initiatives. By promoting sustainable land use practices and alternative income sources such as agroforestry and non-timber forest products, the project enhances the socio-economic resilience of communities, reducing their dependence on unsustainable exploitation of forest resources.

Certification

The project holds additional certifications under the Climate, Community, Biodiversity Standards (CCB), including Climate Gold and Biodiversity Gold. These certifications recognize the project's commitment to addressing climate change, supporting local communities, and preserving biodiversity. Through its comprehensive approach to sustainable forest management and community engagement, the Kulera Landscape project sets a high standard for REDD+ initiatives, ensuring long-term environmental and social benefits while promoting local empowerment and conservation.
