Matavén Project

Overview

This project stands as a beacon of conservation and community empowerment within the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest in Colombia. Encompassing nearly 1.9 million hectares, this project embodies a collaborative effort between indigenous communities, global institutions, and local stakeholders to preserve vital forest ecosystems and combat climate change. Through innovative strategies and inclusive governance, REDD+ Matavén not only mitigates deforestation threats but also fosters sustainable development and enhances the well-being of indigenous populations.

Environmental impact

Matavén serves as a bulwark against deforestation and habitat degradation in the Colombian Amazon, safeguarding diverse ecosystems and endemic species. By implementing robust surveillance and protection measures, including 37 patrol routes manned by indigenous guards, the project effectively monitors and deters illegal activities within the reserve. Furthermore, the project's sustainable land management practices and conservation initiatives contribute to the preservation of critical biodiversity hotspots, ensuring the long-term resilience of forest ecosystems in the face of climate change.

Social benefits

At the heart of Matavén lies a commitment to community empowerment and social inclusion. Through active engagement with indigenous communities and local stakeholders, the project fosters participatory decision-making and promotes traditional knowledge and cultural heritage preservation. Matavén has earned certification under prestigious international standards, including the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) standard. With a Gold Level GL1 certification for Climate Change Adaptation Benefits, the project demonstrates its commitment to delivering tangible environmental and social co-benefits. Led by two esteemed organizations, ACATISEMA and Mediamos F&M S.A.S., the project embodies a collaborative approach to sustainable development, leveraging indigenous knowledge and expertise alongside technical innovation and environmental stewardship.
