The Peatland Protection & Restoration Project in Sumatra, Indonesia, led by PT Global Alam Lestari, focuses on revitalizing 22,900 hectares of degraded peatland rainforest. By safeguarding and rewetting these critical ecosystems, the project prevents the release of over 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. Moreover, it enhances biodiversity by protecting habitats crucial for over 10 critically endangered species and 19 vulnerable species.

Environmental impact

Through systematic rewetting efforts and forest patrols, the project effectively restores damaged peat areas, mitigating the risk of fires and promoting habitat regeneration. By installing compaction dams and blocking canals, the initiative raises the water table, improving soil and water quality while enhancing ecosystem services. The project's conservation measures contribute to preserving peatland ecosystems, one of the most effective carbon sinks globally, and safeguarding the region's biodiversity.
